Map of where tequila is made, mexico regions where mezcal, tequila, and other spirits are produced.

Where is tequila made?

Tequila is made in Jalisco, Mexico and a few surrounding municipalities which is what allows them to have the term "tequila" on the bottle. Look for the phrase "Hecho en Mexico" on the bottle which translates to "Made in Mexico" to ensure your bottle was made in the motherland!

1. What does tequila mean? The word tequila originated from the Nahuatl (Aztec) language and translates to "the place where plants are harvested."

2. Where does tequila come from? Tequila is only produced within the Mexican state of Jalisco including some municipalities in Guanajuato, Michoacan, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. All agave-based distilled spirits that aren't produced within those regions are referred to as "mezcal."
