Luxardo Del Santo is Italy's answer to the alpine herbal liqueur category — a bold, bittersweet green herbal liqueur crafted by the Luxardo family, one of Italy's most storied distillers since 1821. Long sold in Italian markets as Liquore Sant'Antonio, Del Santo only reached the United States in 2025, bringing decades of Italian herbal tradition to American bartenders and collectors.

Made at Luxardo's distillery in Torreglia, in the Veneto region, Del Santo is built on a secret blend of over 20 botanicals — mace, galangal, clove, cinnamon, carnation, and aromatic calamus among them. Its most distinctive ingredient is achillea moscata, a rare Alpine flower that grows only above 6,500 feet in elevation, once used by Roman soldiers to treat wounds and now prized for the distinctive aromatic depth it gives the liqueur. Botanicals are macerated, distilled, blended, and rested before bottling at 40% ABV.

At lower proof than Green Chartreuse (40% vs 55%), Del Santo is more approachable neat and slightly subtler in cocktails, while still delivering full herbal complexity. It's Kosher certified and an outstanding substitute for Chartreuse in classic recipes like the Last Word, Naked and Famous, or any stirred cocktail that calls for herbaceous depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Luxardo Del Santo a Chartreuse substitute?
Yes, and a compelling one. It shares the alpine botanical complexity of Green Chartreuse but is made in Italy and bottled at 40% ABV vs Chartreuse's 55%, making it more approachable neat and subtler in cocktails while still delivering full herbal depth.

What cocktails can I make with Del Santo?
It works excellently in the Last Word, Naked and Famous, Negroni variations, and any cocktail calling for an herbaceous green liqueur. Its balanced bittersweetness adds depth without overwhelming other ingredients.

What makes achillea moscata special?
It's a rare Alpine flower that only grows above 6,500 feet in elevation and has been prized for its aromatic properties for centuries. It gives Del Santo a distinctive herbal backbone not found in most other liqueurs.

Is Luxardo Del Santo new?
New to the US (launched 2025), but the recipe has been sold in Italy as Liquore Sant'Antonio for decades by one of Italy's oldest distilling families, dating to 1821.
